An Evening Out to Hunter Hall

They say a night out alone can be considered self care in the following areas:

Truthfully, when I booked my ticket to the candlelight series for Saturday February 10th I’d considered none of these factors although gratefully experienced all of them. This concert was the second time in my life that I got to experience such a night, and on my own. I am grateful that I didn’t have to drive four hours for this one though. Drive time is a total of 12 minutes round trip. So awesome!

Upon Arrival, I was greeted by Florencia and her son. Of course the iconic Mona was in attendance.

Just about every seat in the house had someone comfortable and ready to be entertained. The audience ranged in age, proving it to be a wonderful experience for children and adults alikeI sat in one of the remaining seats just a few feet from where the performers would take the floor. Lights were dim, and all along the floor, candles helped to set a comforting and inviting mood in the room.

Florencia addressed the audience, reminding us all of the Hunter hall mission to bring artists to community, and music to local families.

My favorite part of the evening was when the musicians addressed the audience, gave background on their friendship, how they met, and their journey to the moment that gathered us all in one room. Not only are they amazing musicians, but they reminded me of the blessing and sense of calm that comes from doing what you love, with those you love. Their friendship, support of one another, and camaraderie, (especially from woman to woman) sets an example our community needs to see.

There were moments when Maki was playing the piano and it was evident we were in the room with greatness. There were moments when Claire was hitting some notes on the violin that I could only describe as Mariah Carey-esque. Their energy together was exciting, and truly a wonder. There is something truly special about witnessing music being played by passionate musicians that have studied most of their lives to master their craft. It is beautiful, and creates appreciation for art, and discipline.

In college, I became intrigued by classical music when I learned of the benefits it has for studying, and the overall effect on the human brain. As a new mom, I am learning about the benefits of classical music for children, and this understanding is helping to further reinforce the benefits of such a venue close to home. Overall there are six areas where exposure to classical music can help impact our children:

1. Cognitive Development

2. Emotional Regulation

3. Enhanced Concentration

4. Stimulated Creativity

5. Cultural Awareness

6. Improved Social Skills

When I play back videos of the concert to my 2 year old, he smiles, dances, and enjoys the music. It makes me happy to know that Hunter hall also offers an array of classes for children and adults alike. These experiences my family and I can enjoy together. I can't wait to attend a show with my little one, and eventually enroll him in classes. I know he'll find as much wonder in the music as I do.

Since I've discovered Hunter Hall, I've had quite a few different experiences and more to come:

1. I got to listen to Claire and Maki practice for their big night

2. I attended a networking event that helped introduce me to some of the ambitious women in the neighborhood

3. I was able to witness Claire and Maki play together with a full audience

4. There are other events, like fundraisers, coming up in March that I will be attending as well.

If you were not able to attend on February 10th, don't fret. Abdiel Vazquez will be playing on Sunday March 24th. Get your tickets here. Seating is limited so don't miss out!
